Stories from our trip to Cambodia, Dec 2006

Siem Reap City

Strung Siem Reap

On Monday (Christmas Day!) we were rather tired out. Slept in and had breakfast at the hotel. We then took a stroll along the river, Strung Siem Reap, towards the Old Market.

The market was bustling. The outer shops (those nearer the roads) had household goods and tourist souvenirs. Deeper inside was a wet market selling vegetables and meat. There is also a little alcove full of clothes stalls.

Scene from the market

Just outside the market was a row of small local restaurants. We had lunch at one of these, Songtheay Restaurant. Turned out, it was only slightly less costly than the fashionable restaurants on Club Street. However, I believe that it would have cost much less if, instead of ordering from the menu, we had gotten the ready-made meals that were displayed in glass cases at the front of the restaurant.
