Chow & Mehul

Stories from our trip to Cambodia, Dec 2006

Where we ATE

Phnom Penh

Mekong River Café
The café's exotic decor attracted our attention. The food was ok, though our choice of dishes probably wasn't spectacular: spinach spring rolls, goat cheese salad and vegetable curry.

Café El Mundo
The omlettes were so-so, but the café au lait was great!

Veiyo Tonle
Good food, fantastic pizza... We had a soup, vegetable amok and later a pizza. Incredible!
This Khmer-run restaurant benefits a local orphanage (The New Cambodian Children's Life Association). The children put up a traditional dance. It was very interesting.

Dara Reang Sey
We had breakfast at the restaurant at our hotel just before catching the bus to Siem Reap. It was decent, and they brought fruits at the end of the meal.

Siem Reap

The Soup Dragon
We ordered fresh spring rolls (as opposed to the deep-fried ones) and they were excellent! We also had aubergine curry and fried tofu, both of which were very good.
Umm... actually, we were attracted by their "Happy Hour" where we could get two drinks for the price of one!

Khmer Kitchen
This is recommended in one of the travel guides we looked at, and is indeed very good. We actually went there twice, and on the second visit, it was so packed that we had to make a reservation and return in 15 minutes.

Where we STAYED

Phnom Penh: Dara Reang Sey Hotel
In Phnom Penh, we stayed at the Dara Reang Sey Hotel. It was very clean, but also quite basic. It is just two blocks from the river.

Siem Reap: Golden Orange Hotel
We stayed at the Golden Orange Hotel. It is about 1km from where the nightlife is! Overall it was ok, but not spectacular. It did provide free internet, though!
